In a world where nostalgia for the past and fear of the future paralyze us, I find myself searching relentlessly for hope—the most enduring of human virtues. My story is a dialogue with doubt and belief, darkness and light, and above all, with hope.
The Story
“Legacy of a Shooting Star: Beyond Alcatraz“ is my story—a true account of how my life was upended by an unforgiving justice system. In these memoirs, I invite you to come with me from my beginnings in Tehran to my time in a British prison. Through these pages, I reflect on my family’s history and share my own struggle for survival, dignity, and hope.
Themes and Vision
In Beyond Alcatraz memoirs book, I explore themes of resilience, injustice, and the enduring human spirit. My vision transcends both cultural pessimism and naive optimism: living without fear doesn’t mean having all the answers, but rather discovering that every challenge, every doubt, and even every failure can be an opportunity for deeper discovery. The beauty of Iranian culture and art, the wonder found in my surroundings, the mystery of human relationships, and everyday experience—these are the terrain where the adventure of inhabiting our time with a hope that does not disappoint unfolds for me.
Rediscovering the Present
Through my memoir, I seek to help us rediscover the present. I explore the foundations of Iranian civilization and the questions that define our era: What does progress mean in times of uncertainty? How do we find meaning when the ancient pillars seem to be crumbling? With prose that intertwines philosophy, history, and everyday experience, I offer a book where my voice—and the voices of those around me—become channels for reflection. Each chapter brings me, and I hope you, closer to a fundamental truth: hope is not nourished by the future but by the present; it does not blossom in certainty but in encounters with others.
Liberty and Contemporary Society
My Beyond Alcatraz memoirs book is dedicated to analyzing the constitution of liberty and its meaning in contemporary society. It is the fruit of my research and contemplation in the fields of political philosophy, law, and economics. I seek to show why we desire liberty and what it truly entails. My discussion is both theoretical and philosophical, examining the factors that determine the progress of civilization. I also examine the institutions the West has developed to ensure individual liberty, addressing these issues with a historical perspective to facilitate, in light of an ideal only partially realized, the solution to the problems of our time.
Practical Applications
Beyond Alcatraz memoirs book is a practical application to some critical economic and social situations of today, focusing, above all, on those matters in which a false choice between different possible solutions is most damaging to
Hashtroudi makes us ponder: what path led us to our present situation? What form of government fostered our greatness? What national customs arose from which it emerged? If we examine the laws, we see that they provide equal justice for all in legal disputes. The freedom we enjoy in the public sphere extends to ordinary life as well. However, these advantages in private life do not make us lawless citizens. The principal safeguard against such a fear lies in obeying magistrates and the laws—especially those concerning the protection of the wronged—whether codified or belonging to that unwritten code which, though unbroken, cannot be violated without incurring flagrant infamy.
Actions to Strengthen Hope
There are actions you can take to cultivate hope within yourself.
Shahab Hashtroudi : Hope is not my reaction to what happens, but a personal choice. In the first case, I depend on events beyond my control to feel good or bad. On the other hand, when I cultivate hope as an attitude toward life, I can face any challenge with greater strength.
My recommendations on what to do if you want to rekindle that spark within you, called hope.
How to Strengthen Hope
Choose to focus on the good things in life.
In this world, there is goodness and evil, abuse and help, love and hate. You can decide which of these options you want for yourself. You can also choose what you want to see.
At first, you might say it’s impossible, but believe me, you can train your mind to become accustomed to seeing the goodness and love in the world.
Change your thoughts.
Although it may be difficult to understand, what you see in the world is a reflection of your thoughts. If you choose better thoughts, you will see a different world. For example, if you believe that life is unfair, bad, or a struggle, you will look for events or experiences that confirm that life is as you see it. Change those thoughts.
Remember that what you experience, you have first thought, consciously or unconsciously. So, do the work of personal transformation, dismantling the framework of negative and disturbing ideas. I promise you will see a better world if you cleanse your mind of so much negativity.
Stay away from pessimistic and complaining people.
When you engage in complaining and criticising others, you might superficially feel a “cool feeling in your chest.” It’s your ego saying: I’m right, and the world is as I say it is. But if you look deeper, your energy diminishes, and your emotional state drops because you view the world through a lens of hopelessness.
Continuing to repeat the same pessimistic conversation over and over doesn’t help you nurture hope. So protect yourself and distance yourself from those who don’t add value to your life. If it’s a family member, choose other topics of conversation.
Meditate
There are many benefits to meditation. Among them: a sense of peace, deep relaxation, and a feeling of greater rest. Regular meditation requires commitment and dedication, but it’s well worth the effort.
Seek Inspiration
There are thousands of stories of people who have overcome challenges, of companies that have recovered after bankruptcy, of families that have overcome illness, and of countries that have overcome serious crises of various kinds. When you read about these stories, you realise that if others could succeed, you can too.
Stay Away from the News
The news usually only briefly mentions the thousands of people doing good and the wonderful things happening on our planet.
If you were to become aware of your body, you could see how it reacts or feels after watching the news. Generally, there’s a feeling of tension and a drop in energy. You might also conclude that the world is going downhill or feel fear.
Little by little, you can make improvements that lead you to feel better. It requires decision and commitment on your part. And it’s definitely worth the effort.
